The Infrastructure Monitoring Report (July to September 2023) provides a detailed assessment of WASH-related facilities in eight Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Conducted by Environment & Infrastructure Management Solution (EIMS) under UNICEF, the report focuses on the condition, functionality, and usage of key infrastructures such as latrines, bathing cubicles, water points, tube wells, faecal sludge management systems, and solid waste management sites. The monitoring covered 122,538 individuals and aimed to ensure that WASH facilities meet the required standards of safety, cleanliness, and accessibility. Findings reveal varying levels of functionality, gender segregation, maintenance needs, and user satisfaction across the camps. This report supports evidence-based planning and improvements in WASH service delivery to protect public health and enhance the dignity and well-being of refugees.
This work is part of a humanitarian WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) monitoring and evaluation project carried out in the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. It involved household-level surveys to assess access to clean water, proper sanitation, hygiene practices, menstrual hygiene management, and solid waste disposal among refugee communities. Conducted by EIMS under the supervision of UNICEF, the project aimed to gather accurate data from 1,584 households across eight camps to identify gaps in services, measure user satisfaction, and understand behavioral practices related to health and hygiene. The findings support the planning and improvement of essential WASH services in a highly vulnerable population, contributing to public health protection and better living conditions in the camps.
In 2022, a major fire broke out in one of the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. The fire caused extensive damage to shelters, belongings, and infrastructure, leaving thousands of refugees displaced and vulnerable. The densely packed nature of the camp, use of flammable materials in shelters, and limited firefighting resources contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. Immediate humanitarian efforts focused on rescue, relief distribution, and temporary shelter arrangements.
